Located in Western Europe, occupying most of the Iberian peninsula and beyond, two archipelagos (the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean) and two cities, Ceuta and Melilla, in North Africa.

Spain had 46,661,950 in habitants on 1 January 2009. The population density of 92.46 inhabitants km ², is less than that of most other Western European countries and its distribution along the territory is very uneven: the most densely populated areas are concentrated along the coast and around Madrid, while the rest of the interior is very weakly held.

The currency is the euro (approximately euro is changed to 1.50 U.S. dollars) and is issued by the Bank of Spain, in coordination with the European Central Bank. Since 1 January 1999, the euro was pegged to the value of the peseta, with a fixed exchange rate of 166,386 pesetas for euro. On 1 January 2002, the peseta ceased to circulate, with the euro the sole legal tender, while citizens hold can always change pesetas for euros at the Bank of Spain.

Spain is currently the eighth largest world economy and has become the seventh, as nominal GDP. Spain has traditionally been an agricultural country and is still one of the largest producers of Western Europe, but since the mid-1950s industrial growth was rapid and soon reached a greater weight of agriculture in the economy.
